Maleny Community Precinct Moving Forward
7 September 2008
The Sunshine Coast Regional Council has formed a working group of Council personnel and local community groups to move forward the master planning process for the long awaited Maleny Community Precinct development. Many issues remain unresolved and the principal concerns of environmentalists remain:
- Adequate buffer zones are needed along the entire length of Obi Obi Creek, which borders the land on its southern and eastern boundaries.
- The two defined areas suitable for restoration into wetlands need to be defined and have adequate buffer zones established around them.
- Corridors linking the wetland areas to Obi Obi Creek are vital to ensure the viability of the restoration project in the wetland areas.
- The long promised walking track adjacent to the Obi Obi watercourse from Maleny to Gardners Falls needs to be included in the master planning.
- Council needs to clearly indicate how funding is to be derived for the planning work required on the site, what infrastructure Council intends to provide to the Precinct, and how the remaining balance of the purchase contract with Mr Porter is to be funded.
- Sporting and Recreation groups need to develop and provide to the public of Maleny and Council how they intend to finance and construct their infrastructure, sporting facilities and access to the site, and how they intend to address the serious constraints of slope, water flow, soil stability and erosion control measures.

This community driven website exists to assist with the collation and dissemination of information for and on behalf of the Maleny community. The aim is to cover a wide range of social, environmental, and economic issues of concern, to protect the town's character and to foster support for local food producers and retailers that sell their truely fresh produce. This website is funded by small public donations from many local people, and is maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers. Contributions of opinion and news are welcome. We have received over 500,000 site visits since going online, and over 68,000 so far in 2008. |
