And have a good night....

March 3 2007

It's odd how the smallest, strangest things can give you renewed hope in the species and - well - humanity in general.

I had my car stolen tonight. After the initial flurry of confused thoughts (did I leave it somewhere else? Do you dial 911 or 000?) I got through to a very professional lady who patiently took down all the details and informed me that the local police would be notified and might come around to take a statement but that she would call back to let me know.

Lo and behold - five minutes later she called back to say that the theft had been put into some database and that the police would be around in the morning.

The official business out of the way, she signed off with 'And have a good night' - then giggled and added 'Well, a better night, I hope.' I giggled back and assured her I had little left to steal.

Why I am so intrigued by this? Is it that the police emergency line has brought in 'customer friendly' patter - or the fact that behind the turgid script there was a real person who gave me a laugh when I was close to tears?

Doesn't matter. If you must have your car stolen I can recommend heartily that you have it stolen on the Sunshine Coast. Dial 000 - hope you get the same lady I did.

(It's a white Mitsubishi Colt, by the way - rego # 712DNN).
