More on that Rally

(see here  for earlier post)

The residents of the effected roads are just a little bit peeved. Can't say I blame them. The following sets out some of the issues. Perhaps others might like to lend their support (to the locals, not the rally. Though you have every right to support it  I guess.)

"We only found out a week or so ago when a guy (rather half-heartedly) was dropping off 2 leaflets to residents along the route (one glossy ra-ra on the actual race and one for us residents).

We then got rather upset and penned the letter to the RN to make sure others were aware of what was planned.

Since the RN letter, we've have had a phone call from Regine Reppelt from Conondale who read something in the Sun Coast Daily about 6 months ago and immediately rang Peter Slipper's office (with the "it's good for business" results) and Carolyn Male , who gave her the details to lodge a complaint with Maroochy Police's District Officer, Greg Lewis. Apparently, Caloundra had a small Rally last year and when she spoke to CCC about it, they said : 'oh we did ask residents, but no-one objected.' !!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, right.

Alison (Reesville Road), along with her husband, was incensed - and they started campaigning - within minutes of receiving the brochure last Monday. They rang many authorities (and gave Silverstone an earful too, I think!) and have been doing letterbox drops of email and postal addresses to contact and want us all to get the news to as many people as possible, so we can bombard the relevant authorities with "NO" letters.

She says that Dick Newman had been keen on the race, but that he was gradually being persuaded :~) - he gave a name of the person handling the case for the CCC, but Alison feels that as Dick is our Councillor, all complaints should still go through HIM!

Likewise, the Coppers (Bruce Shillington?) want a "spokesperson" for us to handle everything, but, we all feel that 200 letters and emails to all these figures of authority will have more impact than one petition with 200 signatures, so we are encouraging everyone to write to the below addresses, THIS weekend!!!

'They' say that the road will only be closed 4 hours each day, but, with all the setup and emergency vehicles and safety personnel required at every gateway, there'll be a HUMUNGOUS disruption!

We feel the issues are also things like :

  • we all came here for the tranquility and beauty of the countryside,

  • the proximity to wildlife,

  • the clean air,

  • and that this race will not only cause inconvenience on the days of the race closures,

  • but also pollute the air with fumes, shit and and noise -

  • AND pollute our space with media and helicopters and spectators!!!!;

  • plus the risks of property and people being injured where houses are close to the road and bends (and there are a few particular ones);

  • plus we'll have to stay here at home, to "safeguard" our property;

  • plus the whole concept of the race attracting petrol heads to Maleny and encouraging young idiots into "copycat" racing along the route!!;

  • plus the fact that in these "fossil fuel crisis" times, it seems kinda immoral to allow a race of this nature!!! (surely if we hafta have a SunCoast Rally, it should be a smart science one of encouraging Solar Power, e.g.);

  • plus, how come they have the right to come here to our place of residence and use it as their playground;

  • plus, how come we haven't even been asked if we even want them here??!! (and any money will go to Noosa (their nightly headquarters), not Reesville).

We suggest if they wanna bring money to the Suncoast and Hinterland, they should go and build another Mt Panorama track next to the abattoirs at Kilcoy instead!!!
